Biodiversity Conservation

Tree Planting & Degraded Lands Restoration
Tree planting and degraded lands restoration are central to Green Liberia Climate Change & Poverty Mitigators’ efforts to address deforestation, climate change, and rural poverty. By planting trees on degraded and deforested lands, Green Liberia helps restore ecosystem functions such as soil fertility, water regulation, and biodiversity while increasing forest cover. This approach reduces pressure on Liberia’s remaining rainforests by providing alternative sources of forest resources and rehabilitating landscapes that have been damaged by unsustainable land-use practices.
Green Liberia’s restoration work emphasizes community participation and the use of appropriate tree species to ensure long-term success. Local community members are actively involved in nursery establishment, tree planting, and maintenance, gaining practical skills in land restoration and environmental stewardship. By focusing on degraded lands rather than intact forests, these activities contribute to climate change mitigation through carbon sequestration while supporting more resilient and productive landscapes.
Through tree planting and land restoration, Green Liberia also links environmental recovery with improved livelihoods. Participants benefit from skills development, short-term incentives, and opportunities to engage in sustainable land-use practices that enhance food security and income. This integrated approach ensures that restored lands are maintained over time and that communities become committed stewards of their environment, reinforcing both ecological sustainability and social wellbeing.

Capacity Building

Sustainable Forest Management & Capacity-Building
Green Liberia Climate Change & Poverty Mitigators integrates sustainable forest management (SFM) into its core mission of restoring degraded landscapes, protecting Liberia’s remaining rainforests, and addressing climate change and poverty simultaneously. Through tree planting and land restoration activities, GLCCPM focuses on reducing pressure on natural forests by rehabilitating degraded lands and promoting responsible land-use practices. This approach supports biodiversity conservation, improves soil and water resources, and contributes to climate change mitigation while aligning environmental restoration with community needs.
Capacity building is central to how Green Liberia implements sustainable forest management. The organization trains local community members—particularly women and youth—in basic silvicultural skills such as nursery management, tree planting, and forest care. By equipping communities with practical knowledge and hands-on experience, Green Liberia ensures that restoration activities are locally led, culturally appropriate, and sustainable beyond the life of individual projects. These skills also strengthen local leadership and promote long-term stewardship of restored forest landscapes.
Together, sustainable forest management and capacity building enable Green Liberia to link environmental protection with improved livelihoods. Community members gain skills that support income generation and financial independence while actively participating in forest restoration and conservation. This integrated model fosters community ownership, reduces deforestation drivers, and ensures that forest resources are managed in ways that are environmentally sound, socially inclusive, and economically beneficial for present and future generations.

Community Empowerment

Community Empowerment & Poverty Alleviation
Community empowerment and poverty alleviation are at the core of Green Liberia Climate Change & Poverty Mitigators’ mission to address environmental and social challenges together. Green Liberia works directly with rural communities to ensure that local people are not just beneficiaries, but active participants in decision-making and project implementation. By involving communities in environmental initiatives, the organization strengthens local ownership, builds confidence, and promotes self-reliance as a foundation for sustainable development.
Through targeted capacity-building activities, Green Liberia equips community members—especially women and youth—with practical skills that improve livelihoods and income opportunities. Training in areas such as tree nursery management, planting, and land restoration provides participants with employable skills while enabling them to contribute meaningfully to local development. Small incentives and income-generating opportunities linked to these activities help address immediate economic needs while building longer-term pathways out of poverty.
By linking empowerment with sustainable environmental practices, Green Liberia addresses the root causes of poverty rather than its symptoms. Improved livelihoods reduce dependence on destructive activities such as unsustainable logging and land clearing, while strengthened community institutions support collective action and resilience. This integrated approach ensures that poverty alleviation goes hand in hand with environmental protection, creating lasting social, economic, and ecological benefits for communities.

Empowering rural children through education
As poverty in rural Liberia rises a growing number of children are unable to enroll in school. Even those that enrolled are forced out of school and onto the streets to help families make ends meet. This situation threatens to leave another generation locked out of the opportunities that come with education, and that can break the cycle of extreme poverty that has plagued rural communties.
